About Sam

Samantha Carey, PLPC

Sam Samantha (Sam) Carey is a 2023 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University's Clinical Mental Health Counseling Graduate Program. She spent two semesters working with young adults in a college setting and focusing on issues such as identity development, LGBTQIA+ issues and exploration, grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, and life adjustments. She completed her final semester of internship working both in my office and at St. Christopher's Addiction Wellness Center.

Sam practices with a trauma-informed and client-centered perspective. She is poly-, kink-, queer-, trans-, and neurodiverse-affirming with an interest in understanding and addressing her clients' intersectional identities within the therapeutic relationship. She is warm. compassionate and accepting, but she will challenge when she needs to.

Sam is informed by several therapeutic approaches and theories including Internal Family Systems (IFS), attachment theory, and Adlerian therapy. She has training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and she is excited about bringing this knowledge to couples who are interested in repairing or enhancing their emotional connection.

Sam has also completed Brainspotting training (Phase 1). Brainspotting is a therapeutic technique that utilizes the visual field to access and process deep-seated emotions, trauma, and psychological distress. It involves identifying "brainspots," eye positions correlating with emotional activation, to facilitate healing and release through the mind-body connection. In addition to processing trauma, Brainspotting can be utilized in performance enhancement, addiction recovery, and stress management. Brainspotting can be practiced both in person and through telehealth.

Sam is an active member of the Louisiana Group Psychotherapy Society (LGPS) and the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA), attending annual conferences for both and serving as an incoming Board member for LGPS.

"I conceptualize behavior as always having a purpose, which often comes down to feeling safe. I find it important to highlight patterns and help clients identify where change may be helpful. I believe clients have all the power that they need inside, my job is to help bring that out! Together we can build empowerment, awareness, and skills to take with you for the rest of your life. " ~Sam

Sam is available for in-person and telehealth services. She is unable to accept insurance. Her rates can be found here.
